Hydrocore Bag Workout + Why You Should Try It

There’s a new bag in town, and it ain’t like the old bags.

How so? Well, to start, this one is filled with something you use every day … but never in this way.

Okay, okay, I’ll stop with the riddles. Step aside, sand bag. Meet your watery friend, the Hydrocore bag.

What is the Hydrocore Bag?

Onnit Hydrobag

The Hydrocore bag is a workout bag in a league all of its own. Filled with water, it uses the unique power of water dynamics to build unparalleled strength, stability, and explosiveness.

I had the awesome opportunity to test out this unique piece myself with Onnit, and I can’t get enough. Here’s a breakdown of why:

How Do Water Dynamics Build Strength and Stability?

If you’ve ever worked with a sandbag, or even a steel club, you’ve felt how the asymmetrical weight works your entire body. This happens because when you swing a single weight to one side of your body, the opposite side “resists” the momentum of the weight in order to keep you standing upright.

The muscles that are worked when this happens are called stability muscles, and they can lend you some serious foundational, holistic power.

The Hydrocore bag takes this effect to another level by adding moving water into the mix. When you swing the Hydrocore bag, the water inside keeps moving in the direction of your swing, which “pulls” at your primary and stability muscles. As you resist this pull, your entire body is worked, head-to-toe.

Shaped for Strength

The curved shape of the Hydrocore bag, plus its built-in handles, also allows you to swing it, press it, pull it, and lift it through many planes of motion. This means you can also get plenty of torque going, and safely practice savage explosive movements.

One of the reasons kettlebell training is so effective is because of a similar concept. Your muscles are constantly pushing and pulling against the torque and momentum of the bell, which helps build stability and the ability to “explode” into movements.

The Hydrocore takes this effect up a notch by adding in the instability of water and long handles, which creates even more of a challenge to control it.

Teaches Technique

Another bomb benefit of the Hydrocore bag is that the water inside can give you an indicator of your technique.

We’ve talked about the benefits of flow workouts before. The Hydrocore bag helps keep you in a flow state by sloshing around in the bag if your swing or timing is “off,” or by flowing with your body if your timing and movements are on point.

Plus, the added resistance of the weight of the water to your flows boosts muscle and core activation, so you encourage growth literally everywhere. Unlike in single-plane training, such as when you simply squat up and down, training in several planes with 360-rotations engages muscles many of us forget about.

Of course, you can also use the Hydrocore bag for standard movements like squatting, where water will naturally slosh around.

Stay Swole On The Go

If you’ve ever tried to lug kettlebells or other weights with you while traveling, then you know how much fun it actually isn’t.

The great thing about the Hydrocore bag is that you can dump the water out … pack it flat … then refill it for your workout at your destination! This makes traveling with gear so much easier, and cleaner to deal with than sand.
